Brazil registered 268,721 new vehicles in September, a record for the month, and the Chinese brands' week reflected a market that is growing and getting more crowded at once. Prices were set with tax thresholds in mind, luxury launches kept coming, and one of the oldest Chinese names in the country ran into financial trouble again.
Pricing to the threshold
GWM launched the Haval H7 plug-in hybrid at R$261,000. The figure is not arbitrary: it matches the 2026 ceiling for the IPVA vehicle-tax exemption in São Paulo state, and GWM says it cut its margin and negotiated with dealers to reach it. The H7 sits between the H6 and H9, with a flex-fuel 1.5-liter turbo engine, two electric motors, 370 hp and up to 130 km of electric driving. More on the brand at GWM.
Caoa Chery went after the seven-seat segment with the Tiggo 9, from R$249,990 for the petrol version and R$299,990 for the plug-in hybrid. Both are launch prices, and the company has not said what follows them.
Denza moves upmarket
BYD's luxury brand had three announcements in a week. The Denza Z9 GT went on sale at R$670,000, R$20,000 above the figure first announced, with 1,155 hp. The Z electric sports car was confirmed for Brazil, without a price or date. And the B3 electric SUV was seen testing in São Paulo ahead of a launch later in 2026, expected at around R$350,000. BYD also opened its first Flash Charging station in the Americas at a Denza dealership in Brasília; the unit is rated at 1,500 kW, though the local connector limits it to 1,000 kW. See Denza.
The sales picture
September registrations rose 16.16% year on year, and the year-to-date total of 2,156,499 is the second-best on record. Within that, BYD placed third in retail sales with 10.94% after five straight months at the top, behind Fiat and Volkswagen. Its smallest car kept spreading: the Dolphin Mini led registrations in six states and the Federal District, where the top five were all Chinese models.
A distributor in trouble
SHC Group, which has represented JAC in Brazil since 2011, filed for court-supervised debt restructuring a second time. The request covers R$239.5 million across 44 companies; one bank is said to be owed more than R$100 million. Its first case began in 2018. For owners, the question is what happens to service and parts while that plays out; the reports do not say. See JAC.
Coming from local plants
- Leapmotor's updated C10 is due to be assembled in Goiana, Pernambuco, in 2027, with a flex-fuel range extender.
- Geely raised the imported EX2's price slightly ahead of local production planned for December.
What it means
- The H7's price shows how closely launches are now tuned to state tax rules. Check the threshold in your own state before comparing.
- Launch prices on the Tiggo 9 are introductory, with no stated follow-up figure.
- If you own or are considering a JAC, ask the dealer directly about warranty and parts supply during the restructuring. More at Chinese cars in Brazil.
