Indonesia's week turned on BYD: a Jakarta event for Flash Charging and Danza models, September rankings that put it third, and an admission that its new local plant still has to be filled. In the background, the 2027 local-content rule is pushing GAC and MG to adjust.

BYD's week

BYD introduced Flash Charging in Indonesia on October 14, claiming up to 1,500 kW per connector and 10% to 70% in five minutes. At the same event a vice-president said 110,000 BYD new-energy vehicles are on Indonesian roads. BYD ranked third among brands in September with 6,031 wholesale deliveries and 7,421 retail sales, behind Toyota and Daihatsu, and says its priority is fuller use of its new Indonesian plant. The Atto 1 was the best-selling model by wholesale at 4,840 units in a market that fell 2.7% to 79,540. The Danza brand launched the New D9 MPV at Rp 1.08 billion and the Z9 GT at Rp 2.25 billion; the Z9 GT is far above its China price, a gap BYD Indonesia's president partly put down to national tax differences.

Models under consideration

BYD says an updated M6 with the second-generation Blade Battery could be announced next month, the Atto 2 may join the lineup between the Atto 1 and Atto 3, and it is still assessing the Racco kei car. None has a date. A design registration suggests the Chery–Huawei Luxeed V9 MPV could come, though it is not confirmed.

Other launches

MG launched the MGS6 EV on October 14 against the Deepal S07 and Xpeng G6; a later report puts the expected price around Rp 550 million on the road in Jakarta. GAC Aion added the UT Urban between the standard and premium trims. In commercial vehicles, Geely Group's Farizon SV has had 140 units distributed since June, against 3,619 Toyota HiAce sold from January to September.

Local content

Indonesia's EV rule requires 60% local content (TKDN) in 2027. GAC says its cars are at 40% and it hopes its Aion models will reach the threshold; MG Indonesia also says it is preparing (report).

What it means

  • BYD's position in the rankings is strong, but its stated priority is local factory utilisation, not new models.
  • Premium pricing diverges sharply from China: the Z9 GT costs more than double its China price range.
  • The 2027 local-content threshold is a deadline for brands that import or assemble with less local content.
